Here are five tools from my kitchen that I just love! Click on the photos if you’d like to see where you can get the tool, or something quite similar. These are not paid endorsements. I just really love them and want to share my favorite kitchen tools with you!
Meat Claws and Shredder — I used to use forks to shred chicken or pork from the slow cooker. Then I got this tool for my husband to get briskets, chickens and turkey breasts off of the smoker. The package noted that you can also use these to shred meat. I’m completely blown away by how easy they make the job. For shredding, I also use this bamboo cutting board with grooves that catch excess liquid so you can pour it back in the pot and keep your work space clean. For years I had a burger patty former, which worked great. I would cut squares of waxed paper and stack the burgers two or four high and place them in ziplocs for the freezer, or the fridge, depending on when we’d be eating them. That system was ok, but the burgers would get a bit lumpy and uneven…oh well. But alas! Then my in-laws showed up with this little beauty, which stores each patty in a stack-able section, with the top section having a lid. Brilliant! You can also buy extra stacks of four if you cook for a crowd. I still place waxed paper in each section so I can easily peel the patty out to place on the grill, but now my burgers are G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S!Even if you don’t use a zester often, I believe that having a great one is a wise investment. I find uses for this all the time. It is also a grater that works for hard cheese especially and even for decorative chocolate sprinkles for cocktails or desserts. This one takes the cake (no pun intended) when it comes to zesters I’ve owned or tried elsewhere. It is sharp, has a perfect grip, and features a smart sheath to keep you from zesting your fingers! Thanks to Sally & Tom Fouch for this favorite kitchen tool!Maybe I’m stating the obvious here, but the basics are just as important to highlight as the gadgety tools, right? These are my trusty nesting measuring cups. The only thing better than this set would be having two. In my house, when cooking or baking is going on, it tends to be a multi-day affair, and the dishes all seem to end up in line to be washed. Of course, measuring cups are the spine of the recipe book, so I say get a primo set or two to get the jobs done.I procured this little item in Western Massachusetts in a little coastal kitchen store. My friend Heather pointed it out, asking if I had one. No indeed! But this has to be one of the greatest developments in basting brushes! The brush is all one piece, silicone, and so easy to get completely clean, unlike those old fiber bristle ones where I always wonder if there is remnant sauce, meat or soap left on the bristles. I also use this as a pastry brush. It picks up sauce, gravy, liquid, butter and more with great ease! This is a must-have.
